A major breakthrough has been recorded in the investigation into last Friday’s destructive fire at Adjiriganor, as authorities have arrested the young man believed to have attacked a firefighter during the chaotic scene.
The suspect, 21-year-old Azumah Sampson, was apprehended by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) after an intensive search and has since been transferred to the police for further questioning.
According to the GNFS, the suspect allegedly stabbed one of their officers in the left arm after attempting to enter the burning structure in an effort to loot. A second firefighter was also injured when a block fell onto his shoulder while crews worked to contain the blaze. Both officers received treatment at Unity Clinic in Madina and were later discharged.
The fire, which broke out around 9:30 p.m., destroyed seven of eight rooms on the upper level of the one-storey building. Fire teams from Legon, Madina, Adenta and the GNFS headquarters collaborated for hours to bring the situation under control, successfully stopping the flames from reaching nearby structures.
Meanwhile, the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and investigations remain ongoing. The GNFS had earlier placed a reward on information leading to the arrest of the suspect, though it is unclear whether a public tip-off contributed to Monday’s operation.
