Ghana’s cyber security “not 100% safe — Cyber expert warns of rising online fraud and scams

Isaac Socrates Mensah, a Computer Emergency Response Team with the Cyber Security Authority has described Ghana’s cyber security landscape as neither safe nor worse off because there is nothing like absolute safety even in our homes.

“We have some protection to some level but we still have issues based on the issues we received over the period. The eco system is fairly good”, he noted.

Mr Mensah indicated that based on incidents reported to the Cyber Security Authority most cases are linked to individuals with almost about 20 million losses when it comes to cyber related attacks.

The kind of threats that affects individuals in Ghana is online fraud which is the most reported incident constituting about 10 million out of gh 20 million cases reported from January to September 2025.

“Investment scam, Job recruitment scam like fake job enlistment, shopping scam, unauthorized access into social media/ online accounts, cyber bullying and mobile money fraud.

He stressed that the government is not left out in this scam. Impersonation of government officials and organizations or entities have their systems broken into by unscrupulous persons.

He said although Ghana doesn’t have a lot of hw grown apps, once there is an issue relating to scam, the Cyber Security Authority liaise with it’s foreign counterparts to help curb the issue from escalation, taking down the posts and retrieving of the social media accounts of the persons involved.

He added that the Authority will soon roll out the registration of sim cards as well as the phone in which these sim cards will be used in
This will enable perpetrators of such crimes to be identified and prosecuted accordingly.

Mr Mensah advised individuals to avoid sharing their One Time Password(OTP) with other people.

As the country observes the Cyber security awareness month, Isaac Mensah said individuals should be very much interested in cyber security matters and update themselves periodically.

” No bank or teleco will ask for your pin or OTP for any reason,” he stressed.

Also every online content must be set with a two way verification process to avoid others from intruding.
