Ghanaian TikToker jailed for threatening President Mahama and gov’t officials

A Ghanaian social media user who threatened to kill the President and other government officials in a viral video has been sentenced to seven months in prison.

David Kwodow Prah Afful, popularly known on TikTok as Kwame Nkrumah II, pleaded guilty before an Accra Circuit Court to charges of threat of death and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace.

The 32-year-old was arrested after livestreaming a video in which he claimed he would kill the President, Members of Parliament, journalists and civil servants if he had access to a gun or cutlass. He also threatened to burn marketplaces and encouraged others to commit similar acts.

Afful was picked up by police at his hideout near Kasoa Market around 14:20 GMT on Saturday, 13 September, after the video went viral.

During proceedings, Afful pleaded for leniency and asked government officials to forgive him for his behaviour.

The Ghana Police Service, in a statement following the sentencing, said that while the country upholds the right to free expression, it will not tolerate statements that incite violence or create public disorder.

The court’s ruling has been welcomed by some observers as a signal that law enforcement will take a firm stance against the misuse of social media to incite unrest.
