Ghana retains top spot as Africa’s leading gold producer, despite industry concerns

Ghana has maintained its position as Africa’s largest gold producer, according to the President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Michael Edem Akafia.

During an interview with JOY BUSINESS on PM Express Business Edition, monitored by WTV, Mr. Akafia noted that Ghana continues to lead the continent in gold output while maintaining a strong presence on the global stage.

“In terms of performance, if you look at it on the global level, Ghana is still maintaining its place as the biggest gold producer in Africa,” he explained. “So those are the positives you have going for it.”

However, he cautioned that behind the impressive headlines lie challenges that require urgent attention. “If you unpack it and look behind those headlines, you find that there may be challenges and issues of concern for the industry. And we believe that Ghana should continue to position itself as a beacon for the mining industry generally, because we are known to be a relatively more mature mining industry,” he added.

Sharing production data, Mr. Akafia revealed that Ghana recorded 4.8 million ounces of gold output in 2024, marking a significant increase over the previous year. He noted that small-scale mining was the main driver of this growth.

“Small-scale production jumped from 1.1 million ounces in 2023 to 1.9 million ounces in 2024, while large-scale production remained flat at about 2.9 million ounces,” he disclosed.

The Chamber of Mines president also highlighted concerns over the government’s planned overhaul of mining laws, which has stirred debate within the industry. Despite these uncertainties, he stressed that Ghana’s mining sector continues to play a critical role in sustaining the economy and reinforcing the country’s reputation as a global mining hub.
