GAF reports Major improvement in condition of El-Wak stampede victims

Fresh updates from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) indicate significant recovery among victims of the tragic stampede that occurred during the military recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium last Wednesday.

The disaster, which has claimed six lives, left dozens injured and sparked nationwide concern over safety at mass recruitment centres.

According to the Acting Director-General of the Department of Public Relations, Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, medical teams at the 37 Military Hospital have made notable progress in stabilising those who suffered severe complications after the incident. She revealed that out of the five victims initially placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), three have responded positively to treatment and have been transferred to a general ward.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, November 17, Captain Arhin explained that 29 victims were rushed to the hospital on the day of the tragedy. She added that medical officers have been providing continuous support to minimise any further loss of life.

“The injured are doing well… five were in the ICU on the first day, but three have improved and have been moved. Our teams are doing everything possible to keep them stable,” she noted.

While some individuals have already been discharged, Captain Arhin confirmed that 16 patients are still on admission, receiving round-the-clock care as doctors monitor their recovery.

She further announced that all medical expenses for the injured are being fully absorbed by the 37 Military Hospital, with support from the government — a measure aimed at reducing the financial pressure on affected families.

“Anyone who comes in with a condition linked to the stampede will have their bills taken care of entirely by the hospital and by extension the government,” she assured.

The tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday, November 12, when overwhelming crowds of young applicants surged through multiple entry points at the El-Wak Stadium in a rush to undergo the recruitment screening. The uncontrolled pressure from thousands attempting to enter the venue led to chaos, resulting in severe injuries and multiple fatalities.
