Fake vice president aide remanded over visa scam

A Circuit Court in Cape Coast has ordered the remand of Patrick Nii Torto into police custody over allegations that he used the name of the Office of the Vice President to defraud unsuspecting individuals.

Prosecutors say the accused collected sums of GH¢5,325 and GH¢8,200 from victims under the pretext of securing Canadian visas and work permits for them.

He allegedly posed as a staff member at the Vice President’s Office and claimed to be a captain in the Ghana Armed Forces.

Operating under the alias Dr Patrick Nelson Ayittey, the suspect is also said to have convinced victims that he had connections with the Canadian Embassy in Ghana.

Despite pleading not guilty to a charge of defrauding by false pretences, the court, presided over by Madam Nana Aba Quiaba Nunoo, directed that he be kept in police custody to assist with ongoing investigations.

Police arrested him at his hideout in Abura after a complaint was lodged at the Abura Police Station on February 16.

Investigators told the court that the alleged fraud occurred between December 2025 and January 2026, and that the accused failed to refund the monies despite repeated demands.

A search conducted at his residence reportedly uncovered about 10 Ghanaian passports along with several personal documents, including school certificates, birth certificates and Ghana Cards.

Further checks by the police revealed that the suspect is neither an officer of the Ghana Armed Forces nor an employee of the Vice President’s Office. Authorities also confirmed he has no links to the Canadian Embassy and is not a medical doctor or holder of a doctorate degree.

He is expected to reappear before the court on March 3, 2026.
