Faith without loyalty to God is hypocrisy – Presiding Bishop

The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Prof. Johnson Asamoah-Gyadu, has called on Christians to embrace lives of gratitude, worship, and obedience to God, describing thanksgiving as a vital expression of faith rather than a ceremonial act.

Delivering his message at the 10th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service of the Fosu Diocese, he reminded the congregation that true discipleship requires continuous praise and acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty. “We should always give thanks to God, because the Almighty God is the supreme God above all. As Methodists, we must continually praise Him,” he said.

He urged Christians to cultivate speech that reflects humility and grace, even in seasons of unanswered prayers.

The Presiding Bishop cautioned against divided loyalties, warning that professing faith in God while placing trust in other sources of power undermines the Christian identity. “If we mention God’s name and yet harbour another god in our lives, we cannot call ourselves Christians,” he declared.

He further challenged believers to demonstrate their faith through practical acts of holiness, stewardship, and service. “God wants us to celebrate Him with our lives and our words, to praise Him with our substance, and to live in holiness. Worship is not complete unless the worshippers obey the good Lord,” he noted.

Calling for deeper submission to divine authority, the Presiding Bishop said: “We must submit to the authority of God, for He holds the whole world in His hands. Our lives and dioceses should be committed into His power.”

Concluding his address, he emphasized obedience as central to walking with God. “We should not harden our hearts but always remain obedient to God’s word, for that is the only way to walk with Him and discern His direction. The Diocese will not be a blessing unless we walk in God’s righteousness,” he affirmed.

The thanksgiving service, marked by solemn worship and joyful reflection, united clergy, church leaders, and congregants in celebrating a decade of spiritual growth, faith, and renewed commitment to the mission of the church.

Writer’s REFLECTION:

Faith is more than just words; it is loyalty to God. When we claim to trust Him but secretly depend on other “gods” in our lives—whether it is wealth, power, or personal desires—we are not living in truth. Faith without loyalty becomes empty and hypocritical. True Christianity calls us to surrender fully to God, to trust Him above all else, and to let our daily choices reflect that devotion. Let us strive to live out a faith that is whole, genuine, and loyal to the One who holds our lives in His hands.
