Sammi Awuku, Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, has expressed deep sorrow over the sudden passing of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Akwatia, describing the loss as both shocking and personally devastating.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Monday, July 7, Mr. Awuku recalled his final conversation with the late MP just three days earlier, on Friday, July 4—a moment he says will remain etched in his memory.
According to Mr. Awuku, he had spoken to Mr. Kumi over the phone at the request of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who was seeking an update on legal matters involving Mr. Kumi. During that call, he said, the late MP sounded energetic and upbeat, even joking in his usual warm and light-hearted manner.
“This was a gentleman on a horizon. He had the right temperament for the difficult politics of our country. He was always so much into consensus-building. He loved people, and he had empathy for people,” Awuku said.
He reflected on their close working relationship in Parliament, where they sat just a few seats apart, describing Kumi as a thoughtful and principled leader who showed care for those around him.
“Honestly, this is somebody I have always said is destined for greatness. He would bear no grudges. He reached across the aisle. There is one fundamental thing about him: he looked out for people—constantly. As of last week, he looked out for me because I was almost in danger. We have lost a solid gentleman,” he added.
Ernest Yaw Kumi’s unexpected death has sent shockwaves through both Parliament and the NPP. A first-term MP elected during the competitive 2024 general elections, Kumi had quickly gained respect for his calm demeanor, people-centered politics, and commitment to unity.
His passing has reignited calls for greater attention to the well-being of public officeholders, with many describing the loss as not only tragic but also a major blow to Parliament and the nation.
