Electricity costs to rise slightly as PURC adjusts tariffs

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 1.14 per cent increase in electricity tariffs for all categories of consumers, effective October 1, 2025.

Water tariffs, however, will remain unchanged during the same period.

In a statement signed by Acting Executive Secretary, Shafic Suleman, the Commission explained that the adjustment stems from its Quarterly Tariff Review Mechanism, which tracks key economic indicators that directly influence the cost of providing utility services.

The review considered the Ghana cedi–US dollar exchange rate, domestic inflation, the generation mix for electricity, and fuel costs, particularly natural gas. According to PURC, such reviews are critical to safeguarding the financial viability of utility service providers and ensuring reliable electricity and water supply to consumers.

For the fourth quarter, the Commission applied a projected weighted average exchange rate of GHS12.3715 per US$1, factoring in an under-recovery of GHS0.3980 per US$1 from the third quarter. It also relied on an annual average inflation rate of 12.43 per cent and approved a weighted average cost of natural gas at $7.7134/MMBtu.

The projected power generation mix for the period remains 28.80 per cent hydro and 71.20 per cent thermal.

PURC stressed that while these parameters informed the 1.14 per cent upward adjustment in electricity tariffs, water tariffs would remain unchanged at 0 per cent for the quarter.

The Commission assured the public that it will continue to monitor the performance of utility service providers and enforce regulatory compliance to ensure efficiency, value for money, and improved service delivery.
