Dr. Bawumia is a potential President of Ghana – Dr. Johnny Andoh-Arthur

During a live interview on WTV’s Sore Na Hyeren Morning Show on August 14, 2025, Dr. Johnny Andoh-Arthur, a social psychology specialist and lecturer at the University of Ghana, shared his perspective on the political landscape within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of its upcoming presidential primaries.

Dr. Andoh-Arthur centered his remarks on the party’s internal contest and the role of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, whom he described as “a potential President of Ghana.” According to the lecturer, Dr. Bawumia’s track record in government, his political acumen, and his ability to engage with diverse segments of the Ghanaian population make him a strong contender not only in the NPP primaries but also on the national stage.

He noted that political leadership is not solely about policy proposals but also about the capacity to connect with people, navigate challenges, and inspire confidence in both the party base and the wider electorate. In his view, Dr. Bawumia’s public service experience, particularly in economic management and digital transformation initiatives, positions him as a figure who could command both party loyalty and national appeal.

“The upcoming NPP presidential primaries will be an important test of not just personalities but of the party’s vision for Ghana,” Dr. Andoh-Arthur said. “In that context, Dr. Bawumia stands out as someone who could potentially take up the highest office of the land.”

He emphasized that while political competition is healthy for democracy, it is important for the NPP to conduct its primaries in a way that strengthens unity rather than deepens divisions. He also urged party delegates to focus on the broader national interest when casting their votes, considering not just the needs of the party but the aspirations of the Ghanaian people as a whole.

Dr. Andoh-Arthur’s remarks add to the ongoing public discourse about the future leadership of Ghana and the internal dynamics of the NPP as it prepares for one of the most closely watched primaries in its history.

As the contest heats up, all eyes will be on how candidates like Dr. Bawumia frame their vision for the country and engage with both party faithful and the broader public. For now, at least in the eyes of Dr. Andoh-Arthur, the Vice President has the profile and potential to step into the role of Ghana’s next president.
