Deliver real justice, not just legal formalities – Mahama to new Supreme Court Justices

President John Dramani Mahama has charged the newly appointed Justices of the Supreme Court to rise above procedural formalities and focus on delivering real justice that serves the Ghanaian people.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at the Jubilee House on Thursday, July 3, President Mahama reminded the seven justices that their elevation comes with not just legal authority but a profound moral responsibility.

“You’re expected to serve not as arbiters of technicalities, but as stewards of justice and conscience,” the President said.

He urged the judges to interpret the Constitution in ways that protect the vulnerable and promote the common good, noting that their appointments represent both constitutional trust and national hope.

“Yours is not only a legal role, but a moral responsibility to safeguard our Constitution’s spirit,” he added.

President Mahama emphasized the Supreme Court’s vital role in preserving democracy and protecting citizens’ rights, describing the bench as the final guardian of the rule of law.

“It is to this court that people turn when their freedoms are threatened, when justice seems distant, or when the complexities of modern governance test the Constitution,” he noted.

The President praised the justices for their legal expertise and experience, stating that they have earned their place on the highest bench through merit and integrity.

The appointments are part of broader judicial reforms under the Mahama administration aimed at restoring trust in public institutions and strengthening Ghana’s legal framework.

The newly sworn-in Supreme Court Justices include:

  • Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei

  • Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh

  • Justice Senyo Dzamefe

  • Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo

  • Justice Philip Bright Mensah

  • Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo
