The Lay Chairman of the Methodist Church Ghana, Cape Coast Diocese, Dr. Patrick Mensah-Amoah, has expressed deep concern over the state of healthcare delivery in Ghana following the recent assault of a nurse at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge).
Speaking on WTV’s Morning Show, Sore Na Hyeren, on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Dr. Mensah-Amoah described the matter as “very sensitive” and urged that thorough investigations be conducted to establish the facts surrounding the incident. He further appealed to healthcare professionals to remain patient in the line of duty, despite the numerous challenges they face.
Background to the Incident
The controversy stems from a viral video that captured relatives of a patient physically assaulting a nurse at Ridge Hospital’s emergency department. The disturbing footage, which surfaced over the weekend, drew widespread condemnation from the public and triggered swift intervention by the Ministry of Health.
Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has since directed a full-scale investigation into the incident. In a statement, the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Tony Goodman, stressed that security agencies have been engaged to ensure justice is served and that such occurrences do not happen again.
“The Minister has condemned the attack and has asked that investigations be conducted. Security agencies have been tasked to move in and deal with it because it is wrong, and we do not want it to recur,” Mr. Goodman stated.
Ministry’s Response
The Ministry has announced immediate measures, including tightening security at Ridge Hospital and probing the reported delay in treatment that allegedly triggered the confrontation. Minister Akandoh also visited the hospital to reassure staff of the government’s support and reaffirm its commitment to safeguarding healthcare workers.
While acknowledging challenges such as delays in emergency care, the Ministry underscored that violence against medical staff is unacceptable. It further appealed to the public to exercise patience, cooperation, and mutual respect, which are essential ingredients for timely and effective healthcare delivery.
Dr. Mensah-Amoah’s intervention adds a moral and faith-based dimension to the discussion. By urging patience on the part of health workers and restraint from the public, he stressed the importance of maintaining a humane and respectful atmosphere within Ghana’s healthcare facilities.
He reiterated that while authorities investigate and address systemic challenges, healthcare professionals and the public alike must commit to upholding peace and dignity in order to ensure quality healthcare delivery across the country.
