Bellingham saves a point as Madrid’s struggles continue

Real Madrid’s difficult run continued on Sunday as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Elche, stretching their winless streak to three matches. Despite twice going behind, goals from Dean Huijsen and Jude Bellingham rescued a point for the league leaders.

Speaking after the match, head coach Xabi Alonso admitted his frustration but maintained a positive outlook as the season continues.

“It’s football. After a strong run, we’ve now had a few results that don’t match what we want. We know what we’re aiming for, and we have to keep pushing. We’re not satisfied, we always want to win. There are many games ahead, so we’ll focus on the next one and assess what happened today.

“We keep competing. Every game has its own situation. The result is important, and we’re honest with ourselves. The attitude is good. When things get tough, we respond. This is Real Madrid. Criticism comes with the job, but our goal is to get better.”

One surprise in Alonso’s line-up was the decision to play Fran Garcia on the left wing while Vinicius Junior started on the bench. Alonso noted that the Brazilian understood the plan.

“We discussed it beforehand. We talk often. Vinicius understood the role he could have today. We’ve used him this way before, like in the game against Getafe. We’re not pleased with the result, but everyone is ready to help us get back on track.”

Alonso also stressed that the team’s chemistry and understanding of his approach are steadily improving.

“Our connection keeps growing with time and work. We understand each other better. We win together and we feel it when we don’t win. The team spirit is there. Now we need to turn this moment around, starting with the match in Athens.”
