Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi dies after short illness

The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, has died following a brief illness that kept him away from parliamentary proceedings in recent days.

Mr. Kumi’s passing has cast a dark cloud over the House of Parliament and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). According to Joy News’ Parliamentary Affairs Correspondent, Kweku Asante, today’s session was marked by a notably subdued and reflective atmosphere as MPs absorbed the news of their colleague’s untimely demise.

Kumi, who was serving his first term as a legislator under the NPP banner, had been embroiled in a contentious legal dispute concerning the legitimacy of his election to Parliament.

His political career was marked by controversy from the outset, and just weeks before his death, the Supreme Court had overturned a contempt conviction against him tied to the disputed 2024 parliamentary election outcome.

Earlier this year, in February 2025, the Koforidua High Court had found him guilty of contempt for defying an interim injunction that prohibited him from participating in the swearing-in ceremony as a Member of Parliament. The court had also issued a bench warrant for his arrest, citing his persistent absence from court and his refusal to comply with judicial orders.

Ernest Kumi’s sudden death brings an abrupt end to a turbulent yet promising political journey and leaves a significant vacuum in both his constituency and the ruling party.
