Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has issued a stern warning to members of the NPP Minority Caucus, urging them to resolve internal divisions that he says are undermining the party’s ability to hold the government accountable.
Speaking at a caucus meeting on Thursday, 13th November 2025, at the 7th floor of Job 600, Afenyo-Markin described disunity within the party as the greatest threat to its effectiveness.
Disunity Weakening Party Impact
Addressing his colleagues, Afenyo-Markin stressed that while the Majority in Parliament pursues a coordinated agenda to sideline the Minority, the NPP’s internal quarrels inadvertently make the government’s work easier. “We are not here by accident; we are here by choice,” he said. “But our duty to serve Ghanaians, to represent the voiceless, is suffering. Our people are suffering. And our internal disagreements are turning their challenges into ours.”
He lamented that bickering, backbiting, and whisper campaigns within the caucus have diluted the Minority’s voice in Parliament. The Minority Leader cautioned that these behaviours effectively allow the Majority to dominate discussions and control legislative outcomes, weakening the opposition’s role as a check on government power.
Unity as a Strategic Imperative
Afenyo-Markin urged the NPP MPs to place party unity above personal ambition and political differences, emphasizing that disagreements are natural but must not compromise collective responsibility. “Yes, we will differ on strategies, candidate support for 2028, and visions for the party,” he acknowledged. “But we cannot allow our divisions to make the people of Ghana collateral damage.”
The Minority Leader called on members to refocus on their core mandate: representing constituents, challenging mismanagement, and defending public interest. He insisted that a united Minority is crucial for confronting what he described as the government’s mismanagement of the economy, abuse of state institutions, and increasing public frustration.
Call to Action Against Government Excesses
Highlighting the government’s alleged excesses, Afenyo-Markin said: “The ruling party is running riot—mismanaging our economy, weaponising state institutions, and persecuting our compatriots. Belief without action is betrayal. Our unity is our power, and without it, we fail those we serve.”
The Minority Leader concluded by urging the NPP caucus to foster cohesion, strategic focus, and disciplined engagement in Parliament, insisting that only a united front could effectively challenge government policies and safeguard democratic accountability.
