The 26-year-old midfielder, who played for Hendon FC, was seriously injured in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, and died in hospital on Monday, November 2.
Thames Valley Police said officers were called to the incident shortly after 1:50 a.m. on Sunday. The force’s Major Crime Unit has since taken over the investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
Three men have been arrested in connection with the incident. Two men, aged 21 and 28, both from Luton, were arrested on suspicion of murder, while a 30-year-old man, also from Luton, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. All three remain in police custody.
Detective Inspector Rob Underhill, of the Major Crime Unit, said investigators did not believe there was any wider risk to the local community.
He appealed to anyone who was around Midsummer Boulevard and The Hub between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Sunday to provide information that could assist the investigation.
Police are particularly interested in obtaining mobile phone footage, dashcam recordings and CCTV images from the area.
Hendon FC described Williams’ death as sudden and tragic, saying the midfielder had quickly become a popular member of the dressing room after joining the club in September.
The club said he was beginning to establish himself in midfield through his hard work and selfless performances. He had scored his first goal for Hendon just 10 days before his death in a match against Jersey Bulls.
His former club, Kettering Town, also paid tribute, describing him as talented, kind and inspirational.
Hendon’s match against Woodford Town on Wednesday was postponed as a mark of respect.
