Manchester United are approaching a crucial moment in their season, with the club’s hierarchy facing a decision on whether to continue backing manager Michael Carrick or consider a change in leadership.

According to ESPN, Carrick’s position remains under scrutiny following a disappointing run of results, despite the team’s dramatic Champions League comeback victory against Roma.

The victory ended a nine-game winless run, but Carrick was cautious about describing it as a turning point, insisting that it was only one result.

United’s next Premier League fixture against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday could prove decisive. A win would offer renewed hope of a recovery, while a defeat could deepen the club’s crisis ahead of the international break.

The club’s leadership, including minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, previously backed Carrick following a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on October 25.

The decision was influenced partly by supporters’ reaction, with fans showing support for the manager while directing their frustration towards the players.

However, the club is understood to be considering alternative options should results fail to improve. Although United’s preference remains to retain Carrick, discussions have reportedly taken place about possible replacements.

Carrick’s record has also raised concerns. He won 12 of his 17 matches between January and May, but has managed only three victories in 14 games since then.

United’s struggles have been linked to concerns over recruitment, financial limitations and weaknesses in the squad.

The club spent £155 million during the summer transfer window, but several areas remained unaddressed.

With a trip to Liverpool scheduled for November 22, the outcome of Sunday’s meeting with Aston Villa could have significant implications for Carrick’s future at Old Trafford.
