The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Kwetey, says National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia is qualified to contest the party’s presidential primaries if he decides to enter the race.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, Mr Kwetey said Mr Asiedu Nketia’s years of dedicated service to the party make him deserving of the opportunity to pursue the country’s highest political office.
He described the NDC chairman, popularly known as General Mosquito, as a committed party stalwart who has served the organisation diligently at the highest levels.
Mr Kwetey, however, clarified that his comments should not be interpreted as an endorsement of Mr Asiedu Nketia’s possible presidential ambition.
He said his responsibility as General Secretary is to strengthen the party and ensure a fair playing field for all qualified aspirants.
According to him, the decision on who should lead the NDC into the next presidential election must rest with party members rather than individual leaders.
Mr Kwetey stressed that he would not impose his personal preference on the party, insisting that the eventual candidate should emerge through the collective judgement of its members.
His comments come amid growing discussions within the NDC about possible contenders for the party’s next presidential flagbearer election.
Mr Asiedu Nketia has previously served as the party’s General Secretary and currently occupies the position of National Chairman.
