Construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to officially begin in January 2027, according to the Chief Executive Officer of Accra-Kumasi Expressway Limited, Francis Ahlidza.
His comments follow the completion and handover of the right-of-way for the proposed expressway by the Ghana Armed Forces.
Mr Ahlidza said the Armed Forces was tasked by the Ministry of Roads and Highways and President John Dramani Mahama to deploy personnel, engineers and equipment to clear and define the alignment of the proposed road.
“We expect it to begin by January of 2027,” he said.
He added that President Mahama is expected to cut the sod before Christmas to pave the way for the commencement of the actual construction works.
Speaking on Monday, September 14, Mr Ahlidza described the handover of the cleared right-of-way as a major milestone in the project.
“Today’s handing over ceremony marks a very key milestone in this project. It means that the Ghana Armed Forces have managed to clear the right of way, that is the alignment of the proposed expressway,” he said.
According to him, with the right-of-way now handed over, the project has moved into the procurement phase, while the designs for the expressway have already been completed.
He said construction firms from across the world with the requisite technical and financial capacity are being invited to express interest in the project.
The interested firms will then undergo an assessment, after which companies that meet the required standards will be invited to submit tenders.
Mr Ahlidza explained that the prequalification process is aimed at ensuring that only firms with the technical capacity and experience to handle the complexity of the project proceed to the tender stage.
He said the process is expected to pave the way for the selection of a qualified contractor ahead of the planned commencement of construction in January 2027.
