BREAKING: Methodist Church Ghana elects Alfred Sakyi as Lay President

The Methodist Church Ghana has elected Bro Alfred Sakyi as its next Lay President, following a keenly contested election at the church’s 52nd Biennial Conference in Tema.

The election went into a second round after none of the five candidates secured the constitutional requirement of more than 50% of votes in the first ballot.

Bro Sakyi emerged with 186 votes, equivalent to 46.96% of the ballots cast, while Sis. Agatha Ennin Osei placed second with 79 votes, representing 19.94%.

Bro. Krobea had 49 votes, Bro. Haizel polled 36, and Bro. Bedai obtained 9 votes.

After the first round failed to produce an outright winner, the contest proceeded to a run-off. Madam Ennin Osei subsequently conceded, after which delegates formally affirmed Bro Sakyi as the new Lay President through a standing vote.

The outcome places Bro. Sakyi in one of the three executive positions of the Methodist Church Ghana, where he will work with the Presiding Bishop in the discharge of the church’s leadership responsibilities.

He is due to begin his tenure on 1 October 2026 and will serve a three-year term without the possibility of renewal.

Bro. Sakyi pledged his support for the Presiding Bishop, the Most Rev Prof Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, and thanked delegates for the confidence they had placed in him.
