The Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Bodies and Chairman of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving Planning Committee, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has called on Ghanaians to actively participate in the 2026 National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.
Speaking at the media launch of the event at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, Mr. Afriyie Ankrah urged faith-based organisations, corporate institutions and the general public to support the initiative and help make this year’s celebration bigger and more impactful than the maiden edition.
According to him, collective participation in the event will contribute significantly to shaping the future Ghanaians desire and strengthening national unity through prayer, gratitude and reflection.
Mr. Afriyie Ankrah expressed appreciation to sponsors and media partners for their support and commitment to the initiative, while encouraging more organisations and institutions to come on board as preparations intensify.
He also announced that following consultations among Christian religious bodies, Apostle Dr. Eric Nyamekye, President of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council and Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, has been unanimously selected to deliver the sermon during the national Christian prayer service.
Afriyie Ankrah explained that going forward, the responsibility for selecting preachers will rotate among the various Christian councils, allowing the faith community to take ownership of the programme while government provides support and coordination.
He noted that a similar arrangement has been adopted by the Muslim community, with Sheikh Salman selected to preach during the Muslim observance.
The Presidential Envoy further commended President John Dramani Mahama for his vision and commitment to institutionalising the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, describing the initiative as an important platform for fostering national cohesion and spiritual renewal.
The 2026 National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving will be observed on July 1 under the theme, “Resetting Our Values to Build the Ghana We Want.”
The event is expected to bring together Christians, Muslims and other faith communities across the country in a collective act of thanksgiving and prayer for Ghana’s peace, prosperity and development.
