A six-year-old girl has reportedly drowned in an uncovered septic tank at Liberty Estate in Gbetsile in a tragic incident that has renewed concerns over persistent water shortages in the community.
The incident occurred on Sunday, May 24, when the girl, identified by residents as Abi, reportedly went to a neighbour’s house in search of water.
According to reports by Channel One TV, the child accidentally fell into the uncovered septic tank and drowned before help could reach her.
The heartbreaking development has plunged the community into mourning, with residents blaming the tragedy partly on the ongoing lack of reliable access to water in the area.
Residents say recurring water shortages frequently force children and families to move from house to house searching for water, exposing them to dangerous environments and unsafe conditions.
Some community members are now demanding urgent intervention from authorities to address both the water crisis and safety hazards within residential areas.
“This beautiful soul was lost simply because there is no water,” a distraught resident reportedly said.
The incident has also reignited calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations requiring septic tanks and other hazardous structures to be properly covered and secured to prevent future tragedies.
Residents are urging relevant authorities to improve water supply systems in the community while ensuring that property owners comply with safety standards to protect lives, especially children.
