Ablekuma North tops Ghana’s multidimensional poverty rankings between 2021 and 2025

The latest Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) report released by the Ghana Statistical Service has identified several districts within the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions as the best-performing districts in Ghana between 2021 and 2025.

The report attributes the strong performance of these districts to sustained improvements in living conditions, healthcare access, education, sanitation, electricity coverage, and employment opportunities.

According to the findings, Ablekuma North Municipal emerged as the overall best-performing district in the country, recording an average multidimensional poverty headcount of 8.5 per cent over the five-year period.

The district also maintained a place among the top ten best-performing districts throughout the period under review.

Ablekuma West Municipal ranked second with an average poverty incidence of 8.6 per cent, followed by Korle Klottey Municipal at 8.8 per cent.

La Dade-Kotopon Municipal and Tema West Municipal also secured places among the top-performing districts, reinforcing the dominance of urban municipalities in poverty reduction efforts.

Other districts that featured prominently in the rankings include Ayawaso Central Municipal, Ayawaso West Municipal, Krowor Municipal, Ledzokuku Municipal, and Asokwa Municipal in the Ashanti Region.

The report further disclosed that Ayawaso North Municipal recorded the lowest multidimensional poverty incidence nationwide in 2025, at 5.5 per cent.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service, the findings highlight the significant disparity in poverty levels between urban and rural Ghana, with districts in the northern parts of the country continuing to record comparatively higher deprivation levels.

Officials say the data will serve as an important tool for policy planning, targeted investments, and the implementation of social intervention programmes aimed at reducing poverty and improving living standards nationwide.

The report also noted that access to quality education, healthcare, sanitation facilities, electricity, and employment opportunities were among the key drivers behind the strong performance recorded by the top-ranked districts.
