The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has unveiled Ghanaian rapper Medikal as the official ambassador for the “Red Means Stop” anti-drug campaign.
The initiative, spearheaded by the National Youth Authority (NYA), seeks to strengthen nationwide efforts to curb substance abuse among young people.
According to the Minister, the decision to engage Medikal forms part of a broader strategy to make the campaign more appealing and relatable to the youth by harnessing influential personalities within popular culture.
With a strong fan base across Ghana, both through his music career and digital presence, Medikal is expected to amplify the campaign’s visibility and credibility. In his new role, he will champion anti-drug messages through songs, media engagements and social media outreach.
His responsibilities will also include participating in school sensitisation programmes, interacting with students on the risks associated with drug use, weaving campaign themes into performances and music videos, and supporting peer advocacy and youth mobilisation drives.
Addressing Parliament, Mr Opare Addo explained that the celebrity collaboration follows research into the rising trend of substance abuse and forms part of targeted interventions designed to tackle the growing challenge among the youth population.
