UK leads as Ghana becomes 2nd-largest mango exporter to its market

Ghana earned US$75 million from mango exports in 2024, up from US$62.05 million in 2023, according to trading statistics released by the Ghana Export Promotion Centre (GEPC).

The report revealed that the United Kingdom was the largest importer of Ghanaian mangoes, with exports to that market increasing by 21% between 2020 and 2024. Globally, the UK imported mangoes worth US$286.95 million in 2024, compared to US$218.43 million in 2023, ranking fourth behind the USA, China, and the Netherlands.

Ghana was ranked 13th among global mango exporters in 2024, while placing 2nd to Brazil as the largest exporter to the UK. Within Africa, Ghana was the second-largest exporter after Egypt.

The performance, however, varied across other markets. While Ghana’s exports to Belgium declined by 14% in volume and 16% in value between 2020 and 2024, it recorded growth in both Germany and the Netherlands. Exports to Switzerland also showed negative growth over the period, but rebounded with a 17% rise between 2023 and 2024.

The GEPC highlighted the need for market diversification to sustain growth. With global mango imports growing at 3% annually over the past five years, the report identified Canada, the UAE, Kazakhstan, and Nigeria as potential markets with high demand and favorable tariff regimes.

It further noted that Ghana enjoys a comparative advantage with Nigeria, given their proximity, language similarities, and tariff benefits, making it a key market to explore.
