Arsenal FC manager Mikel Arteta has offered unexpected praise to match officials following his side’s win over West Ham United FC on Sunday, describing a key refereeing call as “brave.”
The match featured a highly debated incident involving a foul decision that sparked arguments among players and divided opinion among fans and pundits. After a review, the referee stood by the original call, a moment that became one of the defining talking points of the game.
Speaking after the match, Arteta acknowledged his history of criticising officiating standards but chose instead to commend the officials for their handling of the situation on this occasion.
“Sometimes I have been critical about referees or questioned consistency,” he admitted. “But today they made a brave decision.”
He went on to say that replays supported the on-field decision, insisting the officials had reached the correct conclusion.
“When you look at it again clearly, it is obvious it was a foul and the right decision was made. So, credit to them,” he added.
Arteta’s remarks have drawn attention across the football community, particularly because he has previously been outspoken about refereeing inconsistencies in the Premier League.
His positive assessment of the officials after such a contentious moment has triggered fresh debate among supporters and analysts, many of whom noted the contrast with his earlier criticisms of match officiating.
Despite the controversy, Arsenal secured all three points, continuing their push in the league campaign while the refereeing incident remains a major post-match talking point.
