Real Madrid coach Arbeloa questions referee decision on Valverde red card

Real Madrid kept their La Liga title hopes alive with a dramatic 3-2 victory over city rivals Atlético Madrid, but the match was overshadowed by controversy surrounding the red card shown to Federico Valverde late in the game.

Valverde was sent off after a challenge on Álex Baena, a decision that did not sit well with Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa. Speaking after the match, Arbeloa revealed that he disagreed with the referee’s assessment that the challenge involved excessive force. However, he acknowledged and appreciated the fact that referee José Luis Munuera Montero took the time to personally explain the decision to him after the incident.

Despite the setback of going down to ten men, Arbeloa praised his players for their determination and mental strength, noting that the team had to fight and suffer to protect their lead and secure all three points. He admitted that the red card made the closing stages of the match much more difficult, but described the victory as an important moment in the team’s title push.

Arbeloa also reserved special praise for match-winner Vinícius Júnior, highlighting his bravery, talent, and relentless attitude on the pitch. The Real Madrid coach noted that the Brazilian continues to show his importance to the team with decisive performances and leadership in attack.

The coach also explained his tactical decision to start Dani Carvajal ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold, saying Carvajal delivered a strong performance and handled his defensive responsibilities well. He added that having multiple high-quality options in the squad gives the team flexibility depending on the opponent and match situation.

There was also a positive return for Jude Bellingham, who made his first appearance in nearly two months after coming off the bench. Arbeloa explained that the club plans to gradually reintegrate him into the team as he regains full fitness, stressing that his versatility makes him a valuable asset but also requires careful planning in terms of positioning and role.

With the title race entering a crucial stage, Real Madrid’s victory could prove significant, but the debate over Valverde’s red card remains one of the major talking points from the match.
