Four dead, several injured as gunmen attack NHIA Office in Garu

A tragic scene unfolded in Garu, in Ghana’s Upper East Region, after unknown gunmen stormed the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) office and opened fire on civilians, leaving at least four people dead and several others critically injured.

Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred early this morning when four armed men riding two motorcycles launched the assault. The attackers reportedly targeted bystanders at the NHIA premises before fleeing the area, firing indiscriminately at anyone in their path.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Garu, John Abaare, confirmed the attack, noting that security agencies have since taken control of the situation.

“The police have begun investigations to determine the motive behind the shooting and to track down the perpetrators,” the DCE stated.

Authorities have yet to disclose the identities of the victims or suspects, while residents remain in shock over the sudden violence that disrupted what began as a normal morning in the usually quiet town.
