Ahanta west assembly member nabbed in alleged galamsey scandal

A major anti-illegal mining operation has taken a dramatic turn in the Ahanta West Municipality, as an assembly member is arrested over alleged involvement in galamsey activities.

Samuel Doomson, who represents the Sese Electoral Area, was picked up following mounting allegations linking him to illegal mining operations in the area.

He was initially invited by the Ahanta West District Police Command to respond to the claims but was later transferred to the Western Regional Police Command for further interrogation.

Reports suggest that Mr. Doomson was earlier apprehended by National Security operatives on Tuesday afternoon while riding a motorcycle through the municipal capital.

The arrest comes amid growing pressure on local authorities, as the assembly has, over the past year, repeatedly warned both assembly members and traditional leaders against engaging in illegal mining activities.

Reacting to the development, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ahanta West, Ebenezer Kofi Aidoo, stated that investigators now have concrete proof backing the long-standing allegations.

“Now we have evidence he is involved in galamsey. There are audio, video, and pictures to prove it,” he revealed.

Authorities say the arrest signals a renewed push to clamp down on galamsey, a persistent challenge that continues to threaten the environment and local livelihoods.
