Morocco beat Argentina 2–0 to win FIFA U20 World Cup

Morocco have made history by becoming the second African nation to lift the FIFA U20 World Cup trophy after defeating six-time champions Argentina 2–0 in the 2025 final held at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, Chile.

The North Africans put up a commanding display to outclass the tournament favourites, with Yassir Zabiri of Portuguese club Famalicão emerging as the hero of the night after scoring both goals for the Atlas Cubs.

Argentina entered the final in dominant form, having won all six of their previous matches while netting 15 goals and conceding just two. But Morocco had other plans. Zabiri gave early warning signs of his intent when he burst through the Argentine defence and was brought down by goalkeeper Santino Barbi. Although Morocco appealed for a red card and penalty, the referee—after consulting VAR—awarded only a free-kick and a yellow card.

The decision did little to slow the Moroccans. Zabiri stepped up and delivered a moment of magic, curling the ensuing free-kick beautifully into the top corner to open the scoring.

Argentina tried to respond with relentless pressure, but coach Mohamed Ouahbi’s men stayed composed and hit back on the counter. Ismael Baouf’s smart recovery in midfield set up Othmane Maamma, whose precise cross found Zabiri again to volley home his second goal and seal the victory.

The win crowns a remarkable journey for Morocco, who now join Ghana as the only African nations to have ever won the U20 World Cup. Ghana last achieved the feat in 2009, and now Morocco’s triumph writes a new chapter in African football history.
